You can even build a special relay that lets you command your army and production in a classic RTS view. On top of this, you have the command of several units, buildings, resource-gathering, and construction facilities that you can control via the in-game UI. You then can enter all non-piloted vehicles, friendly or enemy, and then the game turns into a tank sim where you have to manage kiting, maneuvering, ammo, weapon selection/modding. You play it from a first-person perspective, but can also have an external camera as third-person game. Regarding the game itself, Battlezone '98 is like an alternate take on the Cold War, where the Soviet, US, and Chinese discover this thing called bio-metal that leads to a quick technological advancement and turns the Solar system into Cold War proxy battles. Originally, the Red Odyssey only had 400 copies produced, so having it available for everybody after so long was so incredible. They even remastered and re-released the extremely rare expansion pack, Red Odyssey, that gives you a Chinese faction and a full campaign to go through. If not for Rebellion and Big Boat Interactive, the game might have been lost forever, since it took 15 years from release to get it onto Steam and GOG. The people at Activision responsible for Battlezone went on to form Pandemic Studios and somehow the rights to the game ended up at THQ, which Rebellion acquired in the fire-sale after THQ went bankrupt - then Rebellion got the old producer Mike Arkin from BZ1 and 2 to use his studio, Big Boat Interactive, as well as other former BZ developers, like Ken Miller, to remaster the game and really remake a lot of things - meshes, lighting, textures, bug fixing, modding options, and balance issues. I have no idea what was going on in the games industry back in the 90's, but some of the PC games that were released really pushed the envelope and tried things that we would never see today. It deftly manages to balance several genres in one single game with real-time strategy, tank simulation, and first-person shooter. It made me realize how experimental and groundbreaking the game was in 1998 (21 year ago!). Only your intelligence and cunning will protect you here.So I bought and played through Rebellion's / Big Boat Interactive's remaster of the Activision's Battlezone '98 called Redux including its expansion Red Odyssey.
